Why do you see this logo on the label?

This is the symbol for the International Maple Syrup Institute (IMSI).

The Maple Sugar Producers of Quebec, a founding member of The International Maple Syrup Institute.

The Pure Maple Syrup logo

The International Maple Syrup Institute has developed and protected by copyright a stylized design consisting of half a maple leaf, a bucket, a spigot, and a drop of sap. This design is the definitive symbol of Pure Maple Syrup and is used:

To positively identify Pure Maple Syrup products, setting them apart from imitations and dilutions, and to guarantee that containers bearing this symbol contain only Pure Maple Syrup products, verifiable, upon request, in Institute-sponsored laboratories
    To promote Pure Maple Syrup products and thereby increase consumption of this delicacy;
    To finance the Institute's activities.
Benefits
Producers, packers, and distributors of Pure Maple Syrup products have greeted the Pure Maple Syrup logo with enthusiasm because it provides them with:

A distinctive visual symbol to ensure their customers that their products are, indeed, guaranteed Pure Maple Syrup.
A means of benefiting from the Institute's promotional activities.

Use of the logo

The logo is intended to identify Pure Maple Syrup products but it cannot mislead the consumer into believing that the packaging company is in fact the IMSI.

Only IMSI members are entitled to use the logo.

Penalties for offense
Members found guilty of using the logo on:

Containers of blends of Pure Maple Syrup with other sucroses, as well as containers of maple syrup products which have had stabilizers and/or preservatives added
Containers of Pure Maple Syrup which are slightly defective, or any maple syrup product with a light transmittance level of less than 43.9% according to current grading legislation
Advertisements promoting Pure Maple Syrup products as well as non-pure maple products within the same advertisement
Point-of-purchase material used where Pure Maple Syrup products are displayed along with non-Pure Maple Syrup products,

will be subject to the following penalties:

A fine of $2,500 plus court costs, plus any additional cost involved
The member will be prohibited from using the logo for a period of two years
Containers bearing the logo, unused stickers, and labels printed with the logo must be destroyed.

The control network

Proper use of the logo throughout the maple syrup marketing territory will be controlled by:

Local government food inspection services working in cooperation with the Institute. They will report any dubious (or obviously illicit) use of the logo
The numerous members of the IMSI who will report any questionable use of the logo by any of their competitors
Individual consumers, consumer's associations, the trade and mass media, who may report any confusing or doubtful situation.

Any comments regarding the improper or fraudulent use of the logo should be reported directly to the Executive Manager of the IMSI, along with two or three sealed or unopened samples of the product in question, or of the advertisement using the logo improperly.
